<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, the last studies are done, and the comp has been projected on the canvas...there's no hiding now, time to man up and get this thing done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The sketch of Emily, above, really brought my confidence back. I was having a hell of a time trying to get her expression right on the canvas, but this quick color study really locked it in for me. Had a blast with all the red in this one as well. The study of Heather is below...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ5a-GXIwIf8I7KTIST3rPkMedXt19C3fojdLHe_ufeUvvIvNadVCtHs1k0aDBFIntzFMknXoPHQnZgKIrDBP-D2Kt_vvTlCmpGN5ykoMPqLT0wmjpo23Tpt4thwzmJEqaqNxZGDywgxs/s1600/DSC_0170.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ5a-GXIwIf8I7KTIST3rPkMedXt19C3fojdLHe_ufeUvvIvNadVCtHs1k0aDBFIntzFMknXoPHQnZgKIrDBP-D2Kt_vvTlCmpGN5ykoMPqLT0wmjpo23Tpt4thwzmJEqaqNxZGDywgxs/s400/DSC_0170.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<br />
Heather's sketch was by far the fastest, probably only about 20 minutes of easel time on this one. Sometimes it's hard to tell how long I actually spend on these as I have 30 high-schoolers back behind me. So a lot of the painting is really broken up; it's a good thing I don't work in acrylic. I have to admit that doing these color studies before the final really helped me loosen up and enjoy the paint. It's something that I may be adding much more of to my routine. <br />
<br />
So, the painting has started in earnest on the final. I started in on the carolers from left to right, one at a time. They're mostly finished before I move on to the next, but there are a few little details on each that need to be filled in before the finish. And I'm sure I'll find little things here and there to mess with, I always do. Progress follows:<br />

Basic value, and a scarf. This is where I cleaned my brushes today, had to head out early to pick up one of my boys. Too bad all of the underpainting will be dry on Monday when I get back to the canvas... But hey, on the bright side, this should be almost finished for Tuesday's post. Fingers crossed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the friday kicker. After getting my butt handed to me at last week's figure session, I got back on track last night. We had a new model, and she was absolutely awesome. I kid you not, she was built just like a girl out of a Frazetta painting. The gesture poses she gave us were great, and I was pleased with this final 20 minute endeavor as well. Until next time.</div>

<br />
Took some time to work up paint sketches of the two male carolers, Jeff and Matt (left and right respectively), today. It was definitely nice to get back into the pigments, and I'm feeling much more confident about tackling the final painting for the card. The colors will probably change a bit, more towards some rich and warm hues, but these cards usually end up pretty full palette.<br />
<br />
I definitely had a lot of fun painting Jeff (gent on the left), his expressions were so great, and I'm feeling good about how I worked up some of the detail-ish stuff. With Matt, I just kind of fizzled out after I had the big shapes slapped down. And, I can definitely tell I was getting a bit lazy - what with that off-kilter hat and its glaring tangent where the red and white meet...<br />
<br />
Anywho, Jeff was around 45-minutes of broken-up painting during my Art IV and Art I classes, and Matt was 30-ish split between Art II and my Independent studies. <br />
<br />
I was using a pretty full palette on gessoed illustration board, a number two round hog bristle, a similarly sized round sable, and gamsol as a medium. And these are in the 6-inchish range.<br />

We took a couple of weeks off from our figure drawing session at the Dover Art League and I was feeling it last night when we picked back up. Not to mention I situated myself in about the worst place I could - every pose was foreshortened hell. Enough with the excuses though...but I'm still not posting any of what came out of last night. Instead, some more work on the CRHS holiday card.<br />

Studies for the other two carolers, I didn't have as many poses to choose from for these guys, but these two will work fine. Will probably still do a few more sketches before paint, just to make sure I nail down the likenesses a bit better.</div>

And here is the working comp that I okayed with the principal this afternoon. Carolers front and center, the wreath will frame behind them with a pic of the high school inside it, and the Leyendecker-borrowed scroll with an old english-esque CRHS will close off the bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll project everything to canvas on Monday and then start laying paint on Tuesday. I'll take a bunch of pictures along the way. And, deadline - Thanksgiving.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, this Friday's kicker - I made a video! Definitely not saving the world with this, but I had to do some video work for my grad class, and it was an interesting learning experience. I'm definitely going to try and hone my skills with this and get some more up in the future. Enjoy, and don't be to harsh.</div>

Well, it's time to start in on the high school's Holiday card, and the sketches came together earlier on this year during an in-service. I typically take the opportunity to incorporate my boys into the card, but I was feeling something a little different this year. There are a few elements that seem to make recurring appearances - scrolls, wreathes, maybe a street light. But the main thrust of this year's card will be a group of carolers.</div>

Some of the vocal jazz students were kind enough to costume up and pose for me. They actually sang during the reference shoot, so that was super cool - definitely got better facial expressions than just asking them to fake it. This is the first batch of sketches for two of the carolers, more will be up next Tuesday, along with quite a bit of progress on the finish.</div>

I've been wanting to try some very academic graphite drawing for a while now. I don't think I've ever been satisfied with the way that I draw with a pencil, but I think I'm starting to get there. Somewhere around the second session on this, I realized that I could use the HB pencil to push around and blend the 2B and 4B - so that was pretty cool. There is definitely more to do here, and we'll see where next week takes me, I really just want to see how far I can push this one. A little detail below. Obviously the hair and the jewelry need a bunch more work, and I'll keep fiddling with the flesh as well.</div>

And as a kicker, a little 20 minute oil study in Raw Umber and Titanium White. I picked up <a href="http://www.jeffreyrwatts.com/">Jeff Watts'</a> awesome DVD on gesture work last month for my birthday, and have been itching to get my paints back out ever since. I really love his philosophy on approaching the work - which seems to be fairly intuitive. I especially needed to hear the bit about using MORE paint, it really does make a difference. Go figure. Anyways, the study is about 8x10 on canvas board, Gamsol was the medium, and a #2 round hog bristle was the brush.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So for the past four years or so, I have been intermittently asked to create the posters for our school shows. The high school runs a drama production every fall, and a musical in the spring. And I typically use these as an opportunity to get back into some pen and ink work. The shows have not always been ones that I have been personally interested in, but I usually find interesting solutions that are fun to draw - one of the benefits of being the art teacher at the school is I tend to get a lot of freedom. <br />
<br />
But this year was different, this year's Fall production is Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." It's a story that is near and dear to me, even though I cannot honestly remember the last time I saw it (either on stage or screen). But I do remember two versions that really stuck with me - Disney's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085936/?ref_=nv_sr_4">Mickey's Christmas Carol</a>" from 1983 (the year I was born...holy moly) and "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104940/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1">The Muppet Christmas Carol</a>" from 1992. I also remember seeing a pretty good version on one of the local college's stages back when I was in grade school, but the two mentioned earlier are the ones that really hit home. So there was a lot of nostalgia attached to this poster, and it was quite fun to pull from while I worked. So, on to the thumbnails...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3SpCesRtT_Hp8GDjul5gxXv9V5De57_20u1TC9mAOnKNCv9AsMiyUrBbUoH_MsoRZ-0JbrcjZboMvJbVVvmGG5suPqiAc5V3VExjZR0BaeRhljD1GdLQloGMLiUKifAVMcrzOMSCx8Co/s1600/IMG_0264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3SpCesRtT_Hp8GDjul5gxXv9V5De57_20u1TC9mAOnKNCv9AsMiyUrBbUoH_MsoRZ-0JbrcjZboMvJbVVvmGG5suPqiAc5V3VExjZR0BaeRhljD1GdLQloGMLiUKifAVMcrzOMSCx8Co/s320/IMG_0264.JPG" width="196" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">...which were pretty bad. But, some of the best advice I have ever received regarding sketches came from Jeremy Jarvis (the AD for Magic: The Gathering) about four years ago. It was simply that a sketchbook should be the place to get the bad drawings out of the way. That's stuck with me ever since I heard it, and it's really helped me free up my thumb nailing. Regardless, I knew that I wanted to focus on the initial meeting between Scrooge and Marley, and incorporate the other Ghosts of Christmas as well, and I knew I needed it to be a montage. So I looked back to some of these awesome </span><a href="http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/2012/07/mongolian-wizard-series.html" style="text-align: left;">Manchess sketches</a><span style="text-align: left;"> for "</span><a href="http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/07/the-mongolian-wizard" style="text-align: left;">The Mongolian Wizard</a><span style="text-align: left;">" for some inspiration, and the idea started to gel in the bottom right.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxiS9z3Rhbawds_Pn8t5dAz5MRWx2VATdVNtvS4bKCiOlgtf8XHp01Tug4DihD-wpfzEiKoDlsaUcCPXKDy-NEvG5kmsCRKEAx1-4pVBZoEVmbsky5hB8WiOOfin1Jq-XNJi-XDGEW8gM/s1600/IMG_0265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxiS9z3Rhbawds_Pn8t5dAz5MRWx2VATdVNtvS4bKCiOlgtf8XHp01Tug4DihD-wpfzEiKoDlsaUcCPXKDy-NEvG5kmsCRKEAx1-4pVBZoEVmbsky5hB8WiOOfin1Jq-XNJi-XDGEW8gM/s320/IMG_0265.JPG" width="204" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still playing with the overall layout, but a flow between the figures is starting to come together. I knew I wanted to keep the massive scale of Christmas Present framing the left side of the image, and I figured that Christmas future could frame the top right with his pointing arm, and then I could use his cloak to frame the right side and bottom. Scrooge and Marley are going to be central-ish, and I tossed Christmas past in on the right, below Future. Seemed like a plan. I also took a little stab at Marley - really wanted to have some fun with those eyebrows and that nose. Also, played with the idea of the village occupying the bottom center and an open doorway framing Cratchet and Tiny Tim.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbknOgcRZWx8VTMndPdJkHrjNFxfof0uymIIfooxDkw1kaItZyYhZkPbKFsvgFPs9Ra3-i2Jp8L-9ZPkw36mpLr9OHkkNCi8lSWosjntuxYw6KVw6clQPRlB6zUDQxO1Es4-8b5aVdxs/s1600/IMG_0266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbknOgcRZWx8VTMndPdJkHrjNFxfof0uymIIfooxDkw1kaItZyYhZkPbKFsvgFPs9Ra3-i2Jp8L-9ZPkw36mpLr9OHkkNCi8lSWosjntuxYw6KVw6clQPRlB6zUDQxO1Es4-8b5aVdxs/s320/IMG_0266.JPG" width="263" /></a></div>
And here's where everything seemed to click together. CR Thespians splash would go at the top, credits and title in Oldish English font underneath, Christmas future framing top-right, Christmas Present framing center-left, Scrooge recoiling from Marley into Present's massive hand, Christmas Past sitting on Present's other hand looking across, and the village/town occupying the rest of the composition with that little open door framing Cratchet and Tim. This also left a nice negative space on the right side for me to throw in the show times/dates. Was feeling good at this point, so I took to a larger scale to lock it in.<br />

More of the same, just a little more clarity with how the lettering would fit in and some compositional noodling with the placement of Scrooge and Marley. Now for the fun stuff. Reference!<br />

And Marley. Man, love that nose and brows. Also, we were testing for PSATs this day, so I had a good chunk of time in the classroom alone to take care of these shots...except for one of my Advanced students who came in to get some extra work done and got to witness this nonsense.</div>
<br />
From this point it was just layout on the bristol and a whole lot of brushwork. And that was the one big change that I made to my process from earlier posters - the switch from a pen to brush. I used a synthetic liner for most of the poster, but then just attacked it with black before calling it a day. I had a lot of fun, feel like I learned a lot, and our Drama teacher was very happy with the results. I'll call that a good day.<br />

<br />
After tearing into one of <a href="http://www.robertliberace.com/">Rob Liberace's</a> DVDs on drawing the figure in motion, I took a crack at some in depth studies of my own. Following Liberace's method pretty closely on these, black prismacolor verithin pencils on paper that has been toned with shelac. I really liked the process, the hard surface of the shelac eats away the pencils pretty quickly, especially when I really dug into some of the dark areas, but it really let me move the black around like it was charcoal.<br />
<br />
So these are studies for a larger piece that I have had kicking around in my head for a while now, and I really like how the far right figure turned out. These also represent a bit of a new direction for me. <br />
<br />
For the past several years, I have had a fairly concentrated focus on the Sci-Fi/Fantasy illustration genre, but I think that's starting to change. Maybe some of it's because as a teacher, I don't have to conform to some of the requirements/constraints that publishing puts on illustration. Maybe it's because for the first time, I feel like I am comfortable with what I do, where I am, and what I think I want to do.<br />
<br />
Now I certainly haven't lost my interest in the genre, it's just that I'm finding myself more and more drawn to the figure and the dynamism, emotion, and subtlety that it can convey on it's own. I'm not completely sure yet how this is going to translate into new pieces, but I'm feeling more directed now than I have in a while - so I'm excited to follow this track and share the journey along the way.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-38614716827194152022012-03-18T13:42:00.001-07:002012-03-18T16:52:17.142-07:00A Chance Encounter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd8MhCI1z6LykNBb29gDno2HTJKszV0_XvXeD0usrk4-KHkm8B4AxvGeXu0z6YHwGlt9KLlih9tTeVD9v8fEYLu0aZTxaf7zt_i4kizofBH2cXYmOeHmhNV-N2uWUQBcszL_iuzt65qiQ/s1600/Blog+Frost+Titan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd8MhCI1z6LykNBb29gDno2HTJKszV0_XvXeD0usrk4-KHkm8B4AxvGeXu0z6YHwGlt9KLlih9tTeVD9v8fEYLu0aZTxaf7zt_i4kizofBH2cXYmOeHmhNV-N2uWUQBcszL_iuzt65qiQ/s400/Blog+Frost+Titan.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Glad to finally get this one off the easel. It was a good slog through the final work on the three adventurers, with lots of rethinking and repainting as I changed a few things up for the finish on this, and maybe figuring out some semblance of painting that feels right. So I broke down and added a nit-picky round sable to my stable of hog bristle brushes, and also made copious use of a burnt sienna, ultramarine, raw umber, and pretty much any other dark on my palette glaze for the final shadows. All in all, pretty happy with how everything turned out. Enjoy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

And the gift of new work. Not much commentary for this first post in a long time, as I have a pint sized art director sorting through the desk next to me. Two newest pieces off the easel in order:<br />

Early Gifts, 21x30, oil on canvas.<br />
This is the Holiday card for the high school where I teach, and continuing the trend that I started last year, I've made another family portrait out of it. And also, continuing the trend I started with my first card four years ago...there's still a wreath in it.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Final drawing for the Sparkmage painting. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, I was a little worried in the early stages that I had lost some of the movement I had in my initial thumbnails, but I think I found my way back. I'm particularly happy with the armor - I had initially thought I wanted it to have a bit more cobbled-together look, but this, I think, is certainly a bit more "manufactured" and orderly. Probably all of that Warmachine influence bouncing around in my head, and I'm sure watching Iron Man 2 again didn't hurt either... </div><br />
I've got the drawing projected onto the canvas everything primed up for an evening of paint as soon as I leave the keyboard. I'm going to work a bit smaller for these than I have in the past year, this one is clocking in at 20x15, mainly to see if I can speed the whole process up a bit. I'm also not sure how much help my color roughs will be, as I've got something completely different in my head for how I want everything to look, playing into the "Red" color scheme and whatnot. I believe I'll tackle the background tonight, or at least as much as I'm able.<br />
<br />
So, will the painting be done by Tuesday night? We'll see, if the post contains thumbnails and roughs for the second card sample, I suppose that will be our answer. Stay tuned.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-22678421641373632852011-07-12T18:56:00.000-07:002011-07-12T18:56:56.148-07:00Sample Portfolio<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbTns2bO9eqikLfRio63CoSdM9e6soCg1sVEdMZwMZeOlTqcTLLoc_ViCOWLV5ZOjcsiWBswL5_f-DOhCWr8hX_K5jfyhMqZvxoRxSyHG29WPSfs7SOQZXIwGpvgcztZFAVUmu-65YMY/s1600/Blog+SparkmageColorRough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbTns2bO9eqikLfRio63CoSdM9e6soCg1sVEdMZwMZeOlTqcTLLoc_ViCOWLV5ZOjcsiWBswL5_f-DOhCWr8hX_K5jfyhMqZvxoRxSyHG29WPSfs7SOQZXIwGpvgcztZFAVUmu-65YMY/s400/Blog+SparkmageColorRough.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
So, my initial plan, with the end of the school year, was to take a look at all of my unfinished paintings, and simply "clear the docket." However, and I'm not sure when this occurred, after a bit of pondering and gear turning, I decided time might be better spent developing a true sample portfolio of work that I would like to do. And as the old saying goes, "shoot for the stars, and you may hit the moon..." I'm going to work up a group of pieces with the hope of garnering some work with Magic the Gathering. <br />
<br />
As of right now, there will be five pieces in the sample portfolio - one for each color of Mana in the Magic Multiverse. And, each piece should showcase the following:<br />
<br />
<ul><li><i>Dynamic design in the 3:4 compositional frame.</i></li>
<li><i>Accuracy and realism in concept and storytelling (make it believable).</i></li>
<li><i>A painterly approach (and, tackling a personal weak spot, making sure I don't lean on this as an excuse to not include fun details and rendering).</i></li>
</ul><br />
<br />
So the first piece out of the gate is going to tackle a Red card - The Sparkmage. Wayne Reynolds' piece for the "Cunning Sparkmage" just strikes me as everything a piece of Wizards of the Coast art should be. Bad-A looking main character, insane baroque armor and equipment, magical effecty hoohah, and strong design and color. In all, a super inspiring piece, if I can capture a fraction of this I'll be happy.<br />
<br />
So the initial thumbnails are bouncing around fairly inspired by this idea of the mage catching and redirecting the lightning: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjthutm16omqnpcNissDGsyWgLI1BvAtQQij9lpE2lJlWvndi-_FJic9OCV91SmP7caTEOYtCe00FLmhqiQCaR7WP_1NNPFntU2cP2MpHpUH-h2pYcgod3ctzvJ1VVj1LWECVgtSucrXuo/s1600/Blog+SparkmageThumb1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjthutm16omqnpcNissDGsyWgLI1BvAtQQij9lpE2lJlWvndi-_FJic9OCV91SmP7caTEOYtCe00FLmhqiQCaR7WP_1NNPFntU2cP2MpHpUH-h2pYcgod3ctzvJ1VVj1LWECVgtSucrXuo/s320/Blog+SparkmageThumb1.jpg" width="216" /></a></div><br />
In the first image next to some of those really bad thumbnails, you can see my notes on what the important bits of the piece are to be, in order here:<br />
<ol><li><i>Lightning</i></li>
<li><i>Baroque Electro Armor and Equipment</i></li>
<li><i>Dynamic Pose</i></li>
<li><i>Reds (obviously this will be for the painting)</i></li>
<li><i>Background Elements</i></li>
</ol>The first couple of thumbs were really a "shaking off the cobwebs" moment, but they got me moving in the right general direction with a strong diagonal, and D got my juices flowing. I really started to think about Cygnar from Privateer Press's Warmachine at this point (google it, if you're unfamiliar), and that really began to inspire my final armor designs and ideas for the piece.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlqf9Z9OnqEUBXm4O28WUFvI1rIO6uNzwJIjvomphAmpD7RaVTbVPCqo9gUsrS7vSYn-JBytG1L7t9FBJspk8bDzBW0PC8cv4I1m4HcmjFMU_2_O4XL-3EzWwFjVaeyvqizN08iDXNRws/s1600/Blog+SparkmageThumb2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlqf9Z9OnqEUBXm4O28WUFvI1rIO6uNzwJIjvomphAmpD7RaVTbVPCqo9gUsrS7vSYn-JBytG1L7t9FBJspk8bDzBW0PC8cv4I1m4HcmjFMU_2_O4XL-3EzWwFjVaeyvqizN08iDXNRws/s320/Blog+SparkmageThumb2.jpg" width="217" /></a></div>So I tooled around with a few more bad thumbnails. And I'll admit that this is another weak point for me, I have always been a bit impatient with thumbnails, but I want to be better. Yet another area that I will focus on in this portfolio....Anyhow, H brought me back to the initial design of D and that's what I carried over into my little rough in the third image below. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkcdOx7x4XNEenkiA02Wd8lxdu6ToREEz4QbvdicOPtGOpM2U2Vd0s13XuWtuKetloybZVveT8I1x4xkeHZi8wBVa4dUsQFLqrtopvP2qlSe51WjsDKE07Se3lm8tQg1s_KBdlgv1WsgE/s1600/Blog+SparkmageThumb3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkcdOx7x4XNEenkiA02Wd8lxdu6ToREEz4QbvdicOPtGOpM2U2Vd0s13XuWtuKetloybZVveT8I1x4xkeHZi8wBVa4dUsQFLqrtopvP2qlSe51WjsDKE07Se3lm8tQg1s_KBdlgv1WsgE/s320/Blog+SparkmageThumb3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> In taking another look at all of this, it looks like I've lost a bit of the life that was present in the thumb's as well as some of the shape of the armor, will have to rectify that.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbTns2bO9eqikLfRio63CoSdM9e6soCg1sVEdMZwMZeOlTqcTLLoc_ViCOWLV5ZOjcsiWBswL5_f-DOhCWr8hX_K5jfyhMqZvxoRxSyHG29WPSfs7SOQZXIwGpvgcztZFAVUmu-65YMY/s1600/Blog+SparkmageColorRough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbTns2bO9eqikLfRio63CoSdM9e6soCg1sVEdMZwMZeOlTqcTLLoc_ViCOWLV5ZOjcsiWBswL5_f-DOhCWr8hX_K5jfyhMqZvxoRxSyHG29WPSfs7SOQZXIwGpvgcztZFAVUmu-65YMY/s320/Blog+SparkmageColorRough.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The rough above led me into this super rough digi as my color rough. I like where some of the values are going, but I definitely need to push my colors more towards the red side of things. And, though the idea of all of those electro-storage/tesla-coil doodads on his armor being lit up seemed great in my head - our mage here is looking a lot like a Christmas tree.<br />
<br />
Thanks for hanging in there for the maiden post! Stay tuned, Friday night should see the posting of my final drawing for the painting.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-63884858578143392282011-07-12T18:04:00.000-07:002011-07-12T18:06:37.290-07:00Version 2.0<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRIaunyRpkEeUZBEfQ722QlZR0RPy2Gy6CgBS4kdsp5IRiMec4pdfqQ3D3ouBRfOhLg9CWqLRmEK4IKunbQlrQvIQhNTxWa6AASYgp74_HxBUBzZ0mPsOxAIBC_IWdZGvMRt67qORwt7o/s1600/DSC02177.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRIaunyRpkEeUZBEfQ722QlZR0RPy2Gy6CgBS4kdsp5IRiMec4pdfqQ3D3ouBRfOhLg9CWqLRmEK4IKunbQlrQvIQhNTxWa6AASYgp74_HxBUBzZ0mPsOxAIBC_IWdZGvMRt67qORwt7o/s400/DSC02177.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Obviously not a whole lot of activity on here over the past couple of months...What with new children being born, school ending, vacations, and a host of "life" in general. However, the time away has provided me with some hopefully valuable reflection and redirection.<br />
<br />
This was wordier, now it's not. On the pic above, "Holy Crap! That's me hanging next to <a href="http://www.matthew-stewart.com/">Matt Stewart</a>, <a href="http://www.swashbucklestudio.com/">Dominic Saponaro</a>,and <a href="http://www.imaginistix.com/">JULIE BELL</a>. (counterclockwise)" Back in June, I was lucky enough to get two pieces into Phillustration, a great little local illustration show hosted by the Philadelphia Sketch Club. I feel this is a pretty good end-cap to my first <i>real</i> year of digging back in to painting. I am honored for the opportunity to have my work hanging in this show, everything on the walls was absolutely amazing. Honored, and very humbled - there's a lot of work left to do. <br />
<br />
Hmm, looking back, that's still pretty wordy...<br />
<br />
And now, on to other things. The plan is to use this post as a bit of a reboot of the old blog. A year and half ago it got me painting again, and now a year and a half later it's got me looking at my process and approach. And, how I need to strive for a little more consistency. So the plan is to update every Tuesday and Friday night with what I'm currently working on, give a little bit more insight into my process for those interested in such things, and in general keep me working.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-59454331001062175672011-03-26T12:50:00.000-07:002011-03-26T12:50:33.373-07:00Study No. 3 and Blatant Paternal Pride<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKpB9WmaOlHgfBsGtA5JSetpaV7LMvyvxYSXlhaGVXPHzbvIrkW-fj8j_99TuLxDZOL6HU29x_xeBYefyRY-OnPt_kS2GNteAJrhEpWu4zyONKVIRhzaX4w3lahkTiZa1pirmf7z3YfkI/s1600/Blog+Astrobenj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKpB9WmaOlHgfBsGtA5JSetpaV7LMvyvxYSXlhaGVXPHzbvIrkW-fj8j_99TuLxDZOL6HU29x_xeBYefyRY-OnPt_kS2GNteAJrhEpWu4zyONKVIRhzaX4w3lahkTiZa1pirmf7z3YfkI/s400/Blog+Astrobenj.jpg" width="270" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hopefully this is more of a hat trick than a third strike... This little series of portraits has been good fun. Had a blast drawing from Hubble images, got to create a bunch of space tech on the fly (which I think was a bit more successful when I only had to deal with a bust as opposed to a half figure) and I also got to do some more art of the family, which always seems to net me good results. I do wish the lighting was more interesting on the face here, obviously flash lit, but the photo was too cute not to work from.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Two studies from the past week. Both in chalk and charcoal on 6x9 toned paper.<br />
<br />
The self-portrait actually started out twice as REALLY crummy 5x7 oil studies that will NEVER see the light of day. I actually told some of my students to stop looking at them the other day as it might make them worse...<br />
<br />
Anywho, third time proved to be the charm, and it might also have had something to do with switching over to chalk and charcoal, where I could solely focus on value and form and not get so caught up with the color. Have had a lot of fun with these two drawings, I've been working in a real fantasy/medieval vibe for a while now and I was really Jonesing to break out of it. Digging through references for outer space also allowed me to indulge in one of the more rewarding sides of art - actually learning about what you're drawing. I loved outer space and the universe as a little kid, and it's been all kinds of fun diving back into that material and relearning a lot of the stuff that was taught about the solar system et al back in gradeschool. And the <a href="http://www.hubblesite.org/">images</a>, HOLY COW, the <a href="http://www.hubblesite.org/gallery/album/entire/pr2010013a/large_web/">images</a>. How can you not be completely blown away by some of the stuff out there. Well that's a lot of rambling, at least one more of these little studies is one its way for sometime around Tuesday - probably on Facebook and <a href="http://drawntoday.blogspot.com/">Drawn Today </a>before here though - so until then...Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-9057203068897350032011-02-14T18:08:00.000-08:002011-02-14T18:08:47.021-08:00Of Giants and progression...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1MI6JBNDVISMpVDR0T8MioiIVEak2wFYZC8XVibDW_Nt8-NURnw36ORaiEPwDw6822P5GMO4985s23M9XgOM_y6KME2s5dgxGhl9KFcXc8TI5Eu7ujkUPcvsKLur6UNmI4fZat0sGAfI/s1600/Blog+FTWIP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1MI6JBNDVISMpVDR0T8MioiIVEak2wFYZC8XVibDW_Nt8-NURnw36ORaiEPwDw6822P5GMO4985s23M9XgOM_y6KME2s5dgxGhl9KFcXc8TI5Eu7ujkUPcvsKLur6UNmI4fZat0sGAfI/s400/Blog+FTWIP.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
A short little post with some WIP shots of my latest painting. I've been taking the opportunity to work back through some of my thumbnail sketches from right after I got back from the IMC last year. And this frost giant has been lurking around in my sketchbook just waiting to find a piece of unsuspecting canvas. There's obviously a long ways to go in the painting above, but I'm really digging the blues in the underpainting so far, I'll have to see how much of that stays, and in turn, see how much it forces me to change in the figures in the foreground. <br />

I had been wanting to make a maquette for a while now, and this seemed the perfect opportunity. They are absolutely fantastic tools for finding value reference, and damn fun to build as well. I found that my sketches never quite got to what I was looking for in the giant's face, so I figured I would kind of "feel" everything out in the clay. It worked quite well, but I found that the maquette ended up with a bit of a "slow" feeling in the face, the tight drawing turned out to be a bit of a blend of thumbnail sketch and model. A good learning experience in all, and I'm really looking forward to getting this one finished up.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-68959706993910007022011-01-23T17:57:00.000-08:002011-01-23T17:57:36.775-08:00Firebrand<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaig14xYOQB0A-gLEHMiq6Phsw4O5eXTCJyx_loNpmTEsABGWT4uPK1JxSuBxWV7NvI0sumwDEYB6c6hsz_k3nwoNT00_JKRe832YiQJKA1p06gfMn58Gabjjx2i1zr1KHQfO4ZCv__vQ/s1600/Blog+Firebrand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaig14xYOQB0A-gLEHMiq6Phsw4O5eXTCJyx_loNpmTEsABGWT4uPK1JxSuBxWV7NvI0sumwDEYB6c6hsz_k3nwoNT00_JKRe832YiQJKA1p06gfMn58Gabjjx2i1zr1KHQfO4ZCv__vQ/s400/Blog+Firebrand.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">About time this one was finished. Believe it or not this guy has been lurking in the studio since about last April. The water, Good Lord, the water. How it taunted. Quite a challenge getting all those waves in there, I think it turned out alright, but I'll definitely have to tackle another "maritime" piece for some much needed practice. I'm sure that there's some dumb-easy trick to painting water that I just glossed over in the alla prima painter's handbook, but man - this was a challenge. I also suppose this could be considered my first "dragon" painting. Though I prefer to think of the beasty as an overgrown snapping turtle. The finished drawing below for some comparison.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Piggy-backing off of the post below...at least I made use of the time between my "free time." I think I mentioned this before, but I find it's a lot easier to drop in and out of a drawing while teaching than to drop in and out of a painting. Fairly happy with the skulls in the background, but still need to tweak the values. Hoping for paint around December.Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-42154086425377003402010-10-31T15:57:00.000-07:002010-10-31T15:57:20.168-07:00More Joan Progress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp25mWDHE6wb0Rd6dQtccWgGmD2B4DDeRIRiTyHQrgXBYKxiUFR8aFHxmoBOSavmZ4nUbKc3knCtoWR89hc7MPgKZLsYAyr-69b_U5G3JkFql5veVkdV0nN1VOBCZJkFvIvVMfocbaKCE/s1600/Blog+Joan+Rework+WIP3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp25mWDHE6wb0Rd6dQtccWgGmD2B4DDeRIRiTyHQrgXBYKxiUFR8aFHxmoBOSavmZ4nUbKc3knCtoWR89hc7MPgKZLsYAyr-69b_U5G3JkFql5veVkdV0nN1VOBCZJkFvIvVMfocbaKCE/s400/Blog+Joan+Rework+WIP3.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><br />

Had some time between classes this week, so I started slapping down some of the background. It's a lot of real estate, but hopefully it won't take too long once I get cooking. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The high school that I teach at has a really great drama department, and since last year I've been doing the poster art for the fall and spring shows. This fall's show is Harvey - set in the 1950s, it's a little yarn about a fellow named Elwood who sees a spirit, Harvey, who happens to be in the form of a six foot tall rabbit. Needless to say, Elwood's a bit off his rocker, since no one else can see Harvey, but it's his sister, Veta, who has grown tired of Elwood's eccentric behavior, that gets committed to a sanitarium. Don't worry, there's a happy ending.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These posters are a great opportunity for me to stretch my "inking" legs, since they are printed in black and white, and try to channel some of the great illustrators that I admire from the past. The figures are the two leads from the show, we did a quick photo session (man does stage lighting come in handy...), a few sketches for an approval from the drama teacher, some ink and hand lettering later, and here we are. The printers will take care of the rest of the layout, I'll try and post the finished poster once it gets back. Good fun.</div>Robhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16067713538235127057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7767129709528550534.post-41440662383209593282010-10-13T16:57:00.000-07:002010-10-13T16:57:25.242-07:00Works in Progress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoXGDmS75SweKuT6OTwZQqBQK6yK5ToKIqdlZBYw97LD89Kn8Iwq7YK-pVuiO3MxO2DMpdPoDWM-V7CUgDJyQBdYbp087dH3fmRJUeFLGjBmEQPoMEw6UWR9h6dZAaI9wvY4uX58K7rIU/s1600/Blog+WPT+Sketch+WIP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoXGDmS75SweKuT6OTwZQqBQK6yK5ToKIqdlZBYw97LD89Kn8Iwq7YK-pVuiO3MxO2DMpdPoDWM-V7CUgDJyQBdYbp087dH3fmRJUeFLGjBmEQPoMEw6UWR9h6dZAaI9wvY4uX58K7rIU/s320/Blog+WPT+Sketch+WIP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
